Philip and Mary Foster
came to Oregon by sea in 1843 and established a mercantile store
at Oregon Citywith good brought with them around Cape Horn. The same
year he acquired a land claim near Eagle Creek near the modern junction of
Oregon Hwys 224 and 211. In 1846 Foster helped Samuel K. Barlow build the
Barlow Road and supplied many emigrants for several years thereafter. The
graves are in a cemetery on a hilltop above their land claim. It is not open
to the public. The Foster Farm is interpreted today by the Jackson, Zion,
Horseheaven Society. Philip Foster was also the first treasurer of the
Provisional Government of Oregon in 1844-45. |
